It’s that time of year again. School’s back in session. Leaves are starting to brown. Cooler forecasts are on the horizon and Pumpkin Spice Everything is back to ruin it all. It’s Pumpkin Spice Fatigue (PSF) season. Don’t get me wrong. I have no beef with actual pumpkins or spices, for that matter. It’s the Pumpkin Spicing of everything from cream cheese to chips that makes me want to hide until the nation’s annual bout with Pumpkin Spice mania fades.
Poor August doesn’t get to enjoy its 31 days of summer without Pumpkin Spice showing up at the end polluting our coffee creamer, hummus, cookies and candy. Seriously, Pumpkin Spice, WHY are you messing with my Oreos(r)? Is nothing sacred?
Even more annoying is that pumpkin spice does. not. taste. like. pumpkin. I’m just going to leave that there for a minute.
Pumpkin Spice is a mix of spices commonly used in pumpkin pie. Individual mixes will vary but you can bet on cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg with maybe a dash of ground clove and/or allspice. While you can argue whether or not you enjoy the taste of actual pumpkin, the fact is it bears no resemblance to the spice mix. None. Nada. Pumpkin, you are NOT the father. No way. No how. News Flash: Slapping pumpkin spice on an orange label adorned with leaves and tiny pumpkins does not a pumpkin flavor make.
