How to Choose a Champagne

If you’re a champagne novice, selecting the right bottle of champagne can be tricky. Check out my Champagne 101 tips to make sure you pick the right bottle to pop. In order to be called champagne, it has to be produced in the Champagne region of France. If they’re made in the United States, they’re called sparkling wine; cava in Spain, and prosecco in Italy.

It’s important that you choose a champagne or sparkling wine to suit your tastes, as the different types have very different flavors. Brut is the most common type. It’s the driest or less sweet variation. Bottles labeled Extra Brut are even dryer. Extra Dry champagne is sweeter. (Yes, this is the opposite of what dry means when referring to wines.) Demi-Sec and Doux are even sweeter.
