Sonhos

Sonhos are light and crispy doughnuts from Brazil. Learn more about them at KidCulture.

Ingredients

1/3 cup water
2 ounces (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter
¼ teaspoon salt
1/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons flour
1 large egg
Canola or vegetable oil, for deep-frying

1 tablespoon sugar
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

Place the water, butter and salt in a small pot. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Dump the flour in and stir with a wooden spoon until the dough forms a ball and separates from the sides of the pot. Remove the dough from the heat and transfer to a medium bowl. Let the dough cool for a few minutes before stirring in the egg until the dough is well-mixed.

Drop the dough by rounded teaspoonsful into the hot oil. Fry the doughnuts until golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove the doughnuts form the oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.

Stir the sugar and cinnamon together in a small bowl. Roll the doughnuts in the cinnamon-sugar mix and serve.

Makes about a dozen doughnuts.
