How to Chop an Onion

I’m taking it back to basics with this step-by-step video on how to chop an onion. Watch and learn. Knife Skills = Life Skills!

Knife skills are one of the first things you master in culinary school. Those first few weeks are spent slicing and dicing every vegetable known to man. While it may have felt overly tedious at the time, the result is the ability to chop ALL the things! In your home kitchen, learning how to hold and use your chef’s knife properly will make a huge difference in the way you cook. Mastering your knife will make assembling your mise en place easier and faster and the more you use your knife, the more comfortable you’ll be using it.

TIPS:

Dull knives are dangerous so be sure to keep yours sharp. If you’re not comfortable sharpening them yourself, check your favorite kitchen supply stores. Many of them will sharpen your knives while you shop.

Don’t cut off the root end of the onion! Cut your onion in half lengthwise, so you have half the root on either side. The root helps hold the onion’s layers together so it’s less likely to fall apart while you’re chopping.
