Toasting shredded coconut sounds easy enough and it is, but like most simple tasks it’s just as easy to mess up. Shredded coconut browns beautifully in the oven or on the stove top but if left unattended it can burn in an instant.
To toast coconut on the stove top, place the coconut in a skillet large enough to hold it in an even layer. Heat the skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the coconut is evenly browned.
To toast coconut in the oven, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Spread the shredded coconut evenly on a baking sheet lined with parchment or foil. Place the baking sheet in the oven and cook, stirring frequently, until browned to your liking, about 10 to 15 minutes. With either method, remove the coconut from the pan or baking sheet immediately or it will continue to cook. Let the coconut cool completely before using.
